Course contents :  
The aims of this lecture are:

- to give an overview of the main outcomes of the experimental and quasi experimental studies in education

- to identify the state of the art in this field of research



The methodological questions and the review of the literature are focussed around one theme: how to improve effectiveness and equity in educational systems.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
The following chapters will be developed : - Different concepts of equality in education


- Impact of socio-economic background on achievement
- Gender and achievement
- Impact of class size
- Impact of ability grouping
- Impact of structures in educational systems on effectiveness and equity.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
No prerequisites.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
30 h. of practical activities. Usually, students are invited to participate to a research led in the Service de pédagogie expérimentale.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
10 sessions of 3 hours. Students are invited to actively participate (work in groups, oral presentations...)
Recommended or required readings :  
The reading of M. Crahay (dir), L'école peut-elle être juste et efficace ? (Bruxelles, De Boeck, 2012) is compulsory.



Additional readings will be recommanded.

Assessment methods and criteria :  
written examination with all documentation available
