Course contents :  
The course begins with a short introduction to the historical and sociological background to Caribbean literature. After a brief overview of Caribbean literature and its major figures, the rest of the course is devoted to the discussion of selected poems, short stories and novels, most of them written by contemporary writers. The theme this year will be "Jewishness and the Holocaust in Caribbean literature"
Learning outcomes of the course :  
Introduction to anglophone Caribbean Literature and trauma studies with a discussion of representative literary works.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
Very good knowledge of English.

Recommended or required readings :  
Poems, short stories and excerpts from novels will be available at the beginning of the course.
Novels to be discussed in class: Michelle Cliff, Abeng (Plume) David Dabydeen, A Harlot's Progress (Vintage) Caryl Phillips, The Nature of Blood (Vintage)

Written essay and oral examination.
