Course contents :  
The course bears on First Nation Canadian literature, as it has developed in various genres over the past twenty years.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
Students will further develop their appreciation of various literary texts and their ability to write critical essays. They will also be exposed to the literary prepresentation of different living conditions and perceptions of the world.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
A very good knowledge of English.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
As the number of students taking the course should not be too high it should function as a workshop in which each student is actively involved.

Recommended or required readings :  
Poems from Jeannete Armstrong & Lally Grauer's anthology Native Canadian Poetry (1999); short stories by Eden Robinson (Traplines, 1996) & Thomas King (One Good Story, That One, 1993); a play by Tomson Highway (Rez Sisters, 1988); two novels: Tomson Highway's Kiss of the Fur Queen (1998) & Joseph Boyden's Through Black Spruce (2009).
Assessment methods and criteria :  
Students have to write an essay at home. They are evaluated on their participation in class and on the mark they receive for this essay. the oral examination in January mostly consist of feedback on the essay.
