Course contents :  
After a brief theoretical introduction to magic realism and its different manifestations in recent fiction in English, the following novels will be discussed in detail:
D.M. Thomas, The White Hotel
Janet Frame, The Carpathians
David Malouf, The Conversations at Curlow Creek
Learning outcomes of the course :  
The course will seek to enhance the students' ability to decode and interpret complex literary texts, whilst enjoining an attention to cultural context which, in the case of magic realism, ought to reveal interesting differences in intention behind an apparently homogeneous formal façade.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
The course is entirely taught in English.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
Heuristic seminars. Student participation, based on an exploration of the relevant secondary literature, will be requested.

Assessment methods and criteria :  
A written essay, on a course-related but freely chosen topic, will be the object of an oral debriefing with the teacher. Assessment will take into account the students' ability to construct a personal argument on the basis of available criticism on the subject.
