Course contents :

| This course has a B1-B1+ CEFRL level (B1 for writing and speaking skills, B1+ for reading and listening comprehension). The aim of the course is a) to reactivate, consolidate and extend the students' general language understanding and use and b) to introduce the specific features of the language related to politics. This is done in the four language skills, i.e. reading, listening, speaking and writing. Concretely students will deal with:
- selected articles
- discussions and oral presentations
- IELTS or TOEFL type writing exercises
- grammar revision

| The dual purpose of the course is

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :

| In addition to regular preparation work, students will have to:
- write 1 homework essay
- take 2 in-class tests
- do 2 oral presentations
These assignments (+attendance and participation) will be taken into account in the final grade. |

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :

| The course is divided into two weekly sessions of 2h (main course) and 1h (grammar course) from September to May.
Weekly preparation work is expected, the work load this represents is variable and depends on the students' level of competence. |

- Course book Political Science - English Grammar for First-Year Students available online only.
- Book From Dictatorship to Democracy, Gene Sharp (Serpentstail Edition). It will be sold on 19 September during the placement test.

Assessment methods and criteria :
 |
| Written and oral exam in June (two inseparable parts). The written exam (65%) will include reading and listening comprehension exercises, grammar and vocabulary exercises, translations, writing. The oral exam (15%) will deal with articles from a readings file, the oral presentations and the book From Dictatorship to Democracy.
Continuous assessment of progress (class participation and tasks). Accounts for 20% of the final grade.
Work done during the year will be assessed according to a number of criteria including their content and internal cohesion, the accuracy of grammar, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation, and the range of vocabulary and structure. |

Organizational remarks :

| The placement test will take place on 19 September in De Méan (B31) from 8.30 to 10.30. The test is compulsory for EVERY student.
