Course contents :

| In-class course (45 hours)
The course is entitled "English for Psychology Students, Level D" and includes the following:
- reading comprehension of longer authentic English articles dealing with psychology-related topics;
- speaking and communication activities: oral presentations, debates, discussions, etc.;
- further study of subject-specific vocabulary;
- listening comprehension activities based on authentic audio recordings;
- developing a better understanding of the characteristics of academic writing;
- studying grammatical nuances in written speech for a more profound understanding of texts and successful production of text. |

Learning outcomes of the course :
|
| Perfecting the four language skills: reading, listening, writing, and speaking, in the domain of psychology.
By the end of the course the students are expected to be able to:
- understand extended speech, even when relationships are only implied and not signalled explicitly;
- understand long and complex literary and factual texts and specialized articles;
- express themselves fluently and spontaneously, without obvious searching for expressions;
- use language flexibly and effectively;
- formulate ideas and opinions with precision;
- present clear, detailed descriptions of complex subjects, developing particular points and rounding off with a conclusion;
- express themselves in clear, well-structured texts, expressing points of view at some length.

Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :

| The level of the course corresponds to the European level C1. Thus, students will need to have a comprehensive knowledge of the vocabulary and grammar studied in the previous years of their degree (from Remédiation to Level C) or a suitable equivalent. |

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
|
| This course uses a dynamic and interactive approach to learning English for specific purposes and is targeted directly at students studying for a Master's degree in Psychology.
The methods and activities used will involve:
- the transmission of grammar and vocabulary through language practice and adapted exercises;
- using correct grammar and vocabulary in the writing of short texts;
- analysing authentic articles;
- listening activites based on authentic sources;
- oral presentations based on authentic sources;
- subject-specific discussions and debates in class.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :

| Weekly 1.5 hour classes, taught in groups of about 30 students, for the whole academic year.
Students are required to read the texts at home and prepare the exercises from the study book on a weekly basis. |

| Compulsory reading: English for Psychology Students, Level D
The coursebook is a collection of authentic articles, reading comprehension exercises, grammar reminders and exercises and other activities.
As the coursebook is currently being updated, it will be published module by module on e-campus. Students are invited to consult the coursebook there and print the modules from e-campus if desired.

Assessment methods and criteria :
|
| 1. Oral presentation in class - 4/20Oral presentation in class to be given in small groups. The subject of the presentation is chosen by the students and submitted to the teacher for approval.
2. Written classwork - 3/20
Two pieces of written work will be graded: (1) a critical review of a scientific text, and (2) the summary+slides linked to the oral presentation given in class.
3. Written exam - 5/20
Reading comprehension questions based on an unseen text: processing data (true/false, MCQ, etc.), language questions, short explanations of key terms and phrases, etc.;
Language questions (grammar and vocabulary in context) based on the texts seen over the year.
4. Listening comprehension - 3/20
Part 1: an extract from one of the compulsory recordings available on e-campus.
Part 2: based on a new podcast.
5. Oral exam - 5/20
EITHER a presentation of the student's final dissertation OR a presentation of an article chosen by the student and submitted to the teacher for approval. |
