Course contents :  
The phonological and morpho-syntactic history of the English language by means of a discussion of the major changes at each stage of its development, with emphasis on Old English (OE) and its reflexes in present-day English. Chapters on:
  • Major phonological and morphosyntactic changes
  • OE inflections; auxiliaries; preterite-presents
  • Translation of Old English and Middle English texts
Learning outcomes of the course :  
  • Detailed knowledge of the history of the English language in order to explain how English is used today and account for some "exceptions" and processes of grammaticalization
  • A more profound proficiency of English

The BAC2 Introduction à l'histoire de la langue anglaise
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
A syllabus based on X. Dekeyser's Historical Dimensions of English Phonology. Leuven: Acco and hand-outs with phonological and translation exercises.
