Course contents :  
An introduction to contemporary German. The course will mainly focus on writing, but the pronounciation will not be completely neglected.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
See "Course contents". Basic vocabulary and grammar (translation from French into English), acceptable prononciation.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
For students of modern languages and literatures, there is no prerequisite (but they are supposed to progress quickly; see also "Remarks" below).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
Exercises to be made at home, in particular translation of French sentences in German. See "Remarks" below.

Recommended or required readings :  
Detailed notes with numerous exercises will be either available on-line or sent to the students (e-mail with an attached file). Recommended dictionnary: Harrap's Universal.
Assessment methods and criteria :  
The written examination is the more important part: translation (the use of the dictionary will be allowed for only 10 minutes). The pronunciation will be evaluated in the oral examination.

Organizational remarks :  
This is a course for advanced students (master students); they are supposed to progress quickly. The exercises are very important and mostly to be made at home; they are corrected and commented on in class and constitute a good preparation for the examination.
