| GERE0006-4 | Environmental metrology, part 1

| Duration : | 12h Th, 12h Pr |
| Number of credits : |
| Lecturer : | Marie-France Destain, Benoît Mercatoris |
Language(s) of instruction :
| French language |
Organisation and examination :
| Teaching in the first semester, review in January |
Course contents :
| The first part of this course is about the study of the different components of an acquisition chain. The theoretical aspects linked to the statistical analysis of experimental data and to the signal treatment in the time and frequency domains are also addressed. The course is structured as follows:
- Sensor properties
- Uncertainty analysis
- Signal treatment
- Signal conditioning
- Analog-digital conversion
Learning outcomes of the course :
| After completing the course, the student is expected to
- Understand the different characteristics of sensors
- Analyse uncertainties in measurement
- Know about basic concepts in signal treatment
- Acquire a synthetic view of an acquisition chain and of its different elements
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
| ELEC0438-1 (http://progcours.ulg.ac.be/cocoon/cours/ELEC0438-1.html) Electricity
STAT1206-1 (http://progcours.ulg.ac.be/cocoon/cours/STAT1206-1.html) Fundamental statistics
STAT1207-1 (http://progcours.ulg.ac.be/cocoon/en/cours/STAT1207-1.html) Applied statistics |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| The practical works are performed at the laboratory. |
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
| The course of environmental metrology is an hybrid course (LANG2956-1 (http://progcours.ulg.ac.be/cocoon/cours/LANG2956-1.html)). An active part of this is given in English:
- Lectures in English
- Practical Works in French
- Projet in group in English
Recommended or required readings :
| The theoretical course is based on the following reference books:
- Figliola R.S. (1991). Theory and design for mechanical measurements, Wiley
- Holman J.P. (2001). Experimental methods for Engineers. McGraw-Hill Int. Edition, Seventh Edition
- Fraden J. (1997). Handbook of modern sensors, American Institute of Physics, Woodbury, New York
Assessment methods and criteria :
| In first session, a written exam in French will be organised including a theoretical part with notes and a practical part without notes.
An oral exam in French will be organised in second session
A presentation of the project in English will be foreseenduring the last session (end of december). The presentation will be assessed on both the English communication and the technical content. |
