Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the first semester, review in January
Course contents :
Geology and geomorphology
1. Petrology
- Magmatic rocks and associated reliefs
- Sedimentary rocks and dynamic geomorphology
- Metamorphic rocks
2. Tectonic, geological mapping and structural geomorphology
3. Geophysics
- Sismicity and Earth internal constitution
- Gravimetry
- Magnetism
- Plate tectonic and main geostructures
4. Stratigraphy, Quaternary geology
5. Introduction to the Geology of Belgium
Learning outcomes of the course :
For students in bioengineering, this lecture constitutes an introduction to Earth and ecosystems sciences and thus, aims to describe the physical framework inside which life (vegetal, animal, human) processes on Earth are operating. After completing the course the student is expected to - identify the materials constituting the Earth, - interpret the geological and geomorphological structures and processes, - analyse natural disasters, the human impact and issues.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
- Introductory field excursion
- Lecture largely illustrated by personal field experience (notes available from the Student Association)
-Practical works of minerals and rocks identification organised in two phases :
1) On-line preparation (e-campus) based on a documental review controled by a test validating the permission to access the laboratory work session
2) Practical session of sample identification (see e-campus session notes )
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Lectures : 30h Practical Works : 12h Field-study trip and visits : 6h
Recommended or required readings :
LACROIX D. (2003): Notes de cours (FUSAGx, 256 p. + 135 fig.)
GROTZINGER, JORDAN (2010) : Understanding Earth - Freeman, 6th edition.
POMEROL C. - LAGABRIELLE Y. - RENARD M. - GUILLOT S. (2011) : Eléments de Géologie - Dunod, 14ème edition
Assessment methods and criteria :
- Field excursion : written test on the material presented (10% of the mark) - Theory : written examination (60% of the mark) - Practical identification (minerals and rocks) : written examination (30% of the mark)
Assessment criteria : participation in the excursion and laboratory practical sessions is obligatory. In case of unjustified absence, the permission to take exams will be refused.
