Course contents :  
This course covers the modelling of unsteady free surface flows, as a support for the integrated management of hydrographic basins. It addresses specificially the generation and propagation of floods.
The course also provides an introduction to computational techniques in open channel hydraulics and to approaches for integrated management of river basins (in rural and urban areas), both from a qualitative and from a quantitative point of view.
The course also deals with more advanced topics, such as:
  • the analysis of turbulence and its modelling for engineering applications,
  • sediment transport (bedload and suspended load), as well as the morphodynamic consequences (erosion, scour, deposition, ...)
Learning outcomes of the course :  
After this course, the student will be able to:
  • model unsteady open channel flows in river networks or other hydraulic networks
  • understanding the physics underlying unsteady open channel flows (wave propagation, characteristic velocities)
  • compute flows in simple real-world applications, based on the analysis of the characteristics
  • understand and apply properly simplified flow models such as the kinematic, diffusive and dynamic wave approximations
  • assess the stability of sédiments under given flow conditions and design stable channels
  • estimate the sediment transport rate in rivers (bedload and suspended load)
  • assess erosion and sedimentation risks based on the flow characteristics
  • understanding the different degrees of complexity in turbulence modelling in open channel flows

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
Reflection practical exercises, based on real cases study, using moderns' means for the resolution of problems classically met in the field of transient free surface flows.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
The course is made of sessions with a theoretical ex cathedra lecture and a practical session consisting in a guided exercise and the redaction of an individual report at the end of the session or after several thematic sessions. In the latter case, students will be invited to summarize orally the problem to be solved, their results and conclusions.

Assessment methods and criteria :  
Handling in practical works reports is obligatory and leads to an individual mark. An examination is organized for the whole of the course during the June or September examination period. It counts for a theoretical (oral) and exercises (written) parts. The theoretical examinations are organized without any support while the practical examinations can be solved using the course support. The final mark results from a balance between the partial marks.
