Course contents :
|
| General introduction to codicology: work on MSS from the University collection and on digitised MSS accessible online. We will at first consider some main features of the codex: the way it is manufactured, the way it appears, the way it is used. Then we will study more in detail materials and production techniques. We will dwell on the concepts of mise en page and mise en texte (especially for manuscript witnesses of Romance texts) and eventually look at manuscript tradition as the main form of textual tradition in the Middle Ages. |

Learning outcomes of the course :
|
| Students will acquire a general knowledge of codicology, working directly on MSS and on digitisations. They will develop a critical attitude towards the many online databases about MSS. The course is mainly focussed on the alterity of the medieval text. In fact, full comprehension and good interpretation of a given manuscript page require a set of competences and methods different from that required by a printed page. The preparation of notes for writing an exhaustive codicological analysis is also a complementary purpose of this course. |

| Direct contact with MSS, critical usage of online resources. This course will be held in a room adjoining the ULg manuscript room. |

| A dossier and a full bibliography will be provided during the course. |

Assessment methods and criteria :
|
| Final oral exam. Discussion of the contents of the paper (50%), presentation of an original work prepared by the student on a subject agreed with the professor (50%). |
