Course contents :
| The theoretical part of the course aims to provide the student with the necessary theoretical framework in order to carry out a scientific research in the field of criminology. The course includes an epistemological reflection upon criminological knowledge and the relationships between theory and empirical data throughout the major criminological schools. The different types of research in the field of criminology will be analyzed and more specific issues will be adressed.
The practical part of the course includes two parts : one collective, to experiment, by workshops and scientific articles, the principal steps of a research in criminology, from the definition of the topic of research to the collect and analyze of data, through discussion and perspectives parts, and finishing by advices for writing; one individual, to conceptualize a subject of research (different for each student and set by the teacher) resulting in scientific production.
Theoretical and pratical tools will be put at the student's disposal for the development of his/her final work or in view of future researches. |
Learning outcomes of the course :
| The theoretical part of the course must enable the student to understand the conditions of criminology research, according to the different existing theoretical models, and to analyze them with a critical mind. The student must be able to transpose the available theoretical tools into his/her own research questions.
The practical part of the course must enable the student to understand and master the different steps of a scientific research in the criminology field. The goal of this course is to develop specific skills in the process of research to facilitate the conceptualisation of his/her own research questions and the achievement of his/her master thesis. |
