Teaching in the second semester
Course contents :
Stoichiometry, extent of reaction, reaction rate. Definition of an elementary step. Transition-state theory. The rate of an elementary step. The collision theory. Open and closed sequences. The steady-state approximation. Kinetic treatment of catalytic sequences, chain reactions, polymerization reactions. The rate-determining step. Shift of rate-determining step. Rate-determining active centers. Ambiguity of simplified kinetics.
Learning outcomes of the course :
Notions of chemical kinetics necessary to calculate chemical reactors and to study heterogeneous catalysis.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Chemistry - 1st bachelor
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Analysis of an article of chemical kinetics recently published in a scientific journal. This work is carried out by groups of two students, is presented in a written report by each student and is the subject of an oral interrogation.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Face-to-face
Recommended or required readings :
Written notes available for the whole course at the first lesson. These notes are accompanied with a booklet of exercises.
Assessment methods and criteria :
Oral examination on theory and written examination on exercises. Oral interrogation on scientific article of chemical kinetics analysed during worshops.
