| The first year Bachelors Construction course involves the beginnings of cognitive development (mastering the 'why' and exploring the 'how') of more complex subjects which will be presented in later years. It is a preamble to the courses given in the Baccalaureat (Bac2, Bac3) and the Masters (M1, M2), through to the years of daily practice in the architectural profession.
The entire cycle is structured and organised to enable students to progressively discover increasingly elaborate levels of knowledge.
The general title of the 1st year Bachelors Construction course:
'FROM THE GROUND TO THE ROOF: observations, reasoning and principles'
- should enable all students to gradually discover new areas for exploration in order to be able to integrate them into the development of new architectural projects;
- the 1st term is presented as an inventory of basic tools which students must learn to use;
- the 2nd term turns students' interest towards a broader range of different interactive areas to be explored;

- listen, look at and understand information;
- retain information (store, sort and retain), reason and construct;
- process information (choose the best possible answer to the question asked);
- seek out alternatives and be able to adapt answers to specific questions in an autonomous way ... |

Learning outcomes of the course :

| At the end of the first year of the Bachelors' course, students will be able to:
- identify the nature and recognise the roles played by materials used in basic implementation techniques;
- understand and analyse simple constructive systems. |

Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
 |
| There are no prerequisites.
However, the ability to undertake independent research, based on specific instructions is a significant advantage. |

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
 |
| Lectures.
Some sessions are directly supported by architectural project development in the workshop. |

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
 |
| Based on information collective on site by the lecturer (video sequences, slide shows, etc.) each course session will focus students on the observation, identification and analysis of the role played by each element of construction within a specific constructed system.
The next phase consists of presenting a model and analytical representation of a constructed system respecting standard presentation conventions.
The last stage is an open summary of certain alternatives which are close to the constructed system under study, which will have become within the grasp of autonomous students. |

Assessment methods and criteria :

| Written or oral exams... which may take a variety of forms:
- depending on the session;
- depending on the time given;
- depending upon the expected method of submission;
Students are required to present individual work based on open questions and/or multiple choice questions.
Exams are conducted on an 'open book' basis, but require a certain amount of essential preparation.
Assessment criteria are based on:
- respect for basic vocabulary, syntax and grammar (technical, graphic and spelling);
- correct submission on time and in combination with operations to implement constructed pieces of work;
- the ability to identify the impact of changing one parameter of one reference model and be able to respond with a new proposition which is better adapted to the new parameters. |

Work placement(s) :

| No work placements are scheduled during the Bac 1.
However, independent on-site observation could be an excellent way to support understanding of the construction course and may be a very good basis for the Work Placement scheduled for the Bac 2.
No administrative framework (responsibilities, insurance, etc.) exists in Bac 1. |

| Classes may be given in different lecture halls depending on student numbers. All changes will be communicated to students through the MyULg email. |
