Presentation

History of the course:
  • 1994: Creation in Belgium, at the University of Liege (ULg) and the Catholic University of Louvain (KUL), of an official training course for perfusionists
  • 1999: Accreditation of the 2 Belgian schools by the European Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (EBCP)
  • 2004: Decision by the two universities to standardise the programmes and to enlarge the training to fields requiring specific paramedical skills.



At the end of this course, students will be able to manage all extra-corporeal circulation during cardiac surgery or other form of surgery, all extra-corporeal circulation with therapeutic aims, including circulatory and respiratory assistance, chemotherapy ... to manage all auto-transfusion techniques and various blood treatments, carrying out any technical procedures which are particularly technical.

Special conditions of access / students concerned

This course is designed for students holding a Bachelors degree in Nursing.
The persons who are interested are invited to take contact with the person responsible for the training in order to consider their application.

Duration of the training

  • Two years of study (60 credits for the whole course).
  • The course is spread over 10 modules.

    Modules 1 to 5 will be given in the first year, alternating with internships within the institution (60 hours minimum)
    Modules 6 to 10 will be given in the second year. Students should undertake 120 hours training either in the school or in a satellite centre approved by the University and by the EBCP.

Assessment

At the end of each year, students will sit written or oral exams at the end of June. A second session is scheduled in September.
At the end of the second year, students should also present a final dissertation. If required, this work may be postponed upon written request to the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine.
