Course contents :
 |
| During this second master in veterinary medicine follows the teachings of semiology animal production (VETE0448-1) given in the first year of graduate and above the third graduate clinical training.
The theoretical and practical relating to animal production is organized in a double context of individual and herd. This course complements the course of internal medicine, surgery and Theriogenology animal production courses that are specifically targeted to the individual. This course focuses on strategies for collecting and analyzing clinical data, animal husbandry, therapeutic, laboratory in order to increase farm profitability while incorporating the concepts of animal welfare, biosecurity, quality of products of animal origin. |
 |
Learning outcomes of the course :
 |
| In the field of animal production, productivity is often seen as an alternative measure of health status. Also the fact that the disease is present or not is usually less important than the frequency with which it appears or its impact on productivity. Medical herds, the clinician observes individuals but based its conclusions on observations of the entire population.
The course aims to educate yourself General (1) strategies for data collection or individual breeding, (2) their analysis for power (3) quantify the magnitude of the problem, (4) identify the origin and (5) the relationship between the various factors responsible for making and (6) provide practical recommendations to improve the profitability of the production unit.
Like the other courses or clinical training, this course will give you the opportunity to increase your competencies (knowledge essential to mobilize situations as authentic as possible), organizational (how to manage your time, set elements of a relationship of exploitation), relational (in the framework of relations with the breeder or other colleagues), communication (that is to say the control of oral or written), reflexive (as part of the analysis and interpretation of information) or personal.
The more specific objectives of this course are presented in the notes. |
 |
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
 |
| The lessons provided in the course presupposes a good knowledge of current synthetic semiology and pathology related to internal medicine, surgery and Theriogenology animal production.
Whereas the real importance of these prerequisites for the success of clinical training completing this course theoretical, we have mandated the implementation of formative tests (see below point estimates). |
 |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
 |
| This 20-hour course is given-face during the months of October to December 2012. More specific schedule for these courses and their content is available on eCampus. This platform brings together the course content of Theriogenology and Medicine herds. It aims to (1) increase the interactivity between you and the teachers and supervisors. To this end, each area of ¿¿training is the subject of a discussion forum where you can ask questions. It also aims to (2) to allow the learner to self-assess through formative tests required. Finally, it aims to (3) to allow appropriate to the learner to seek more information through internet links or informed to benefit from multimedia illustrations.
Class attendance is strongly recommended.
Ten hours of courses will be given by Dr. Hugues Guyot (lecturer and coordinator). They concern:
- Introduction to Medical herd
- Audit of operations
- Propaedeutics, semiology and tools in medicine herds
- Diseases of the neonatal period and until weaning
- The management of replacement heifers and growth
- Metabolic disorders postpartum
- Lameness
Ten hours of courses will be given by Professor Christian Hanzen. They concern:
- The management of bovine reproduction: approach flock (4:00)
- The propaedeutic of the mammary gland of the cow. Approach flock (1 hour)
- Mastitis in bovine animals: rearing factors (5:00)
These hours will complement theoretical two weeks of clinical training in ambulatory medicine one and the other medicine herds (VETE0445). |
 |
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
 |
| |
 |
Recommended or required readings :
 |
| Lecture notes on the course Herds of Medicine are available via the platform eCampus. It includes all the information (course notes, educational commitments and schedules, internal links, books of interest, book clinic) for medicine herds and Theriogenology. Lecture notes on aspects of reproduction and udder health herd medicine are also available via the website Orbi (www.orbi.ulg.ac.be).
Access to eCampus platform is determined by your enrollment as a student at the University of Liège and the validation of the year of your studies. |
 |
Assessment methods and criteria :
 |
| The summative evaluation
Courses and VETE0443 VETE0492 will be one summative evaluation organized simultaneously in January 2013. Both evaluations will consist of so-called multiple-choice (MCQs) with implicit general solutions (IMS) 6, 7 and 9 with degrees of certainty (DC) and questions QROC (short open-ended questions). You can see on the platform eCampus the rationale for using this type of evaluation. In case of failure, a second session is scheduled for August-September 2013. Course officials reserve the right to offer an oral examination in the second session so if the number of students was significantly decreased.
The success of the course depends not only on the written test (knowledge test) but is also influenced by the completion of two weeks of clinical (VETE0445-1: Clinic Outpatient Clinic and Bovine Herds of Medicine 2GMV).
Theriogenology part of medical courses herds will be formative assessment through the platform Exams. The terms of these formative tests are specified in a separate document available on eCampus platform.
We conduct an evaluation of your knowledge, skills and attitudes to be covered in each clinic clinic animal production (VETE0445-1). The end result will be the average of the results obtained in each of the four clinics. Further information is available in the commitment of the educational clinical VETE0445. |
