Course contents :  
The course "Animal Bacterial Diseases" is subdivided into two main parts: 1) Description of the virulence properties of bacterial pathogens, subdivided into 4 chapters: - colonisation properties - epithelium crossing properties - invasive properties - deleterious properties
The molecular and cellular aspects of the Pathogens-Hosts interactions will be described, so that the student can understand how the cell and tissue lesions occur and develop, that are the basis of the occurrence of the clinical signs.
2) Pathogenesis and description of the bacterial diseases, subdivided into 8 chapters according to either the main portal of entry of the pathogenic bacteria, or the most important organs with lesions and/or clinical signs: - digestive tract - respiratory tract - urinary tract - genital tracts (with the mammary gland) - (sub-)cutaneous tissues, with the eye (conjunctiva, cornea and the mammary gland) - nervous system - locomotor system - circulatory system
In each chapter, the aetiology and pathogenesis are described at first. Then the lesions are presented so that the student can easily understand the clinical signs, diagnosis, treatment and prohylaxis methods. When necessary the zoonotic and food poisoning aspects will be briefly described.
Those global data can be completed by the description of some diseases of special interest during the previous 2-3 years and of the diseases of the wild life species.

The first-line animal species are: bovines, dogs, horses and poultry. Second-line animal species are: pigs, small ruminants, cats, rabbits.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
The objective is to describe the molecular mecanisms of interaction between bacterial pathogènes and their host tissues and cells. By doing so and by transversal analysis with other courses, the student understands the genesis of cell and tissue lesions at the origin of the dysfunction of the organs and, by deduction, the expression of clinical signs observed. This course is therefore complementary of the courses of Bacteriology and Immunology of the 3rd BAC and to the courses of Physiopathology, Pathology and Pharmocology of 1st GMV.This course also represents an introduction to the courses of Vaccinology, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics, and even Surgery, of 2nd GMV, whose orientations are more "clinical".
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
Prerequisites are the following courses: Bacteriology and Immunology of 3rd BAC; Physiopathology, Pathology and Pharmacology of 1st GMV.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
There are no TP, no TD, no PCL associated with the course in 1st GMV.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
36 hours of ex-cathedra lectures: -12 hours by Prof. J. Mainil on bacterial virulence and pathogenesis; - 12 hours by Prof. J. Mainil on bacterial diseases of domestic animals; - 12 hours by Prof. A. Linden on bacterial diseases of domestic animals and wildlife (if and when necessary).
Recommended or required readings :  
Students' notes in MSWord, PwPt, or pdf are already accessible: content of the 3rd BAC (complete) and of the 1st GMV. The PwPt slides (for the 1st GMV content) will be added on line as soon as they are ready. The notes of the 3rdBAC will also bne accessible on line for the 1st GMV students. The following books are proposed as complements (not as first basis). They can be found in the Bacteriology lab, or at the library. Some books target the bacterial virulence mechanisms (Part 1), others deal with the description of the diseases themselves (Part 2). Please refer to the French version.
Assessment methods and criteria :  
The written examination takes place in June and includes three parts. Each part accounts for 33% of the final mark.
- PART 1: one question with a long answer ("question à réponse ouverte longue" or QROL) to assess the deep knowledge of the students on the diseases (= analysis, restitution); - PART 2: questions with short open answers (QROC), without "degré de certitude", to assess the synthetic knowledge of the students on all diseases (= synthesis, restitution)
- PART 3: a multiple choice questionnaire (or QCM) without "degré de certitude") to assess the knowledge of the details by the students (= restitution).

For pedagogy and of prerequisite, this course can not be chosen as isolated course by students who repeat their 3rd BAC.
