Course contents :  
  • Presentation and illustration of the main trends in research in the field of sociology and social movements.
  • Presentation and illustration of contemporary movements and organizations in developing countries linked to the theme of globalization.
  • Socio-political aspects and mobilizations in Latin America.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
  • General introduction to a specialised area of sociology.
  • Knowledge of and critical approach to the main theoretical schools and leading authors.
  • Introduction to the problems of globalization through the social movements and civil organizations relating to it.
  • To question the analysis of contemporary movements linked to globalization through the mobilizations and protests of developing countries, especially in Latin America.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
  • Lectures and regular question and answer sessions.
  • Lectures by invited experts.
  • Group work around the themes developed by the invited experts.
  • 30 hours course (theory), given in the second term, on Fridays from 12 noon-2.30 pm.

  • Reference book to be purchased for the first part: E. Neveu, Sociologie des mouvements sociaux. Editions La Découverte, collection Repères, Paris, 4th edition, 2005
  • Reading portfolio.
Assessment methods and criteria :  
  • Written examination (multiple choice questions) in June
  • Oral exam in September
