Lecturer :  Jean-René Cudell, N...
Language(s) of instruction :
English language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the first semester, review in January
Course contents :
1. Quantum mechanics in 1D: bound states in one or several potential wells. Interaction between wells. Basics of the band theory. 2. Energy spectrum of symmetric hamiltonians. 3. Quasistationary states. 4. Scattering theory in 1D: resonances, optical theorem, analytic properties. 5. Partial-wave theory of 3D scattering. 6. 2D delta-function potential and renormalization.
Learning outcomes of the course :
Developing the intuition of how quantum systems behave. Gaining experience in solving quantum mechanical problems beyond the standard QM course.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
An intermediate level quantum mechanics course similar to PHYS0958-1 and PHYS0959-1.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Listening to lectures, solving problems, both in groups and independently.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
face-to-face
Recommended or required readings :
Flugge, "Practical quantum mechanics", 2 volumes, can help solving certain problems.
Assessment methods and criteria :
Attendance 25% Homework problems 75%
At the start of the course 5 homework problems will be given. They are to be solved at home during the semester and "defended" by every student at special sessions.
