PHYS0904-3  Physics of materials (part)

Duration :  20h Th, 10h Pr, 1d FW
Number of credits :
Master in Chemical Engineering and Materrial Sciences, in-depth approach, 1st year3
Master in Chemical and Material Sciences, specialized approach, 1st year3
Lecturer :  Jacqueline Lecomte-Beckers
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the second semester
Course contents :
Notions of the perfect metallic crystal: liquid, gaseous, solid state, interatomic forces, crystalline networks. Properties of perfect metallic crystals: physical, mechanical (elasticity-plasticity and rupture), thermal, electrical properties. Imperfections in crystalline networks: point defects, dislocations, polycrystals. Alloys: solid solutions (thermodynamics - nanostructure - properties), intermetallic combinations (thermodynamics - properties). Diagram of phases. Applications of basic alloys (steel-aluminium). The significant mechanical properties of metals: yield strength, elasto-plastic domain, rupture, creep, fatigue: microscopic aspects. Non equilibrium structures: modifications in the microstructure of metals during heat treatment.
Learning outcomes of the course :
To describe the microscopic behaviour of metals and to establish the links between organisation on an atomic level, the microstructure of metals and their properties.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Basic physics course.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
1 introduction session + 1 lab session: groups of 12 students with 3 workshops (half day): study of phase diagrams, study of alloys equilibrium microstructures (steel and aluminium), study of the non equilibrium microstructures during heat treatment of alloys (steel and aluminium). Link with the mechanical properties.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Theory classes in the 1st semester (see FSA schedule) and PW during the 2nd semester.
Practical informations (first lecture, PW schedule, weighting: test and examination) available on Science of Metallic Materials (MMS) Unit website:

Recommended or required readings :
Course notes available from the department: MMS laboratory (B52 0/721)
Slides available on: www.metaux.ulg.ac.be (http://www.metaux.ulg.ac.be/)
Assessment methods and criteria :
Test on the subject covered in the practical sessions. Oral exam during the June session.
