Theme 2012-2013: Philosophy and aesthetics of the modernity. Phenomenological and sociological approaches
- Argument: In the bend of the XIXth and XXth centuries, the European civilization knows, partially under the influence of an extremely fast technical progress, a radical transformation. The sciences develop considerably; the industrial world and the big metropolises transform the conditions of existence of the man; the forms of expression are upset by the emergence of new media as the photography and the cinema. In reaction to these cultural and sociological transformations, the Kulturkritik imposes between 1880 and 1930 its severe glance on the modernity (among the most famous Kultukritiker: Nietzsche, Freud, Weber, Spengler, Adorno). This transverse current above all emphasizes the symptomatic faults of the modern civilization: mechanization, reification, individualism, relativism, disenchantment. The cultural pessimism gains gradually all the intellectual circles. Nostalgic of a bygone days, the theorists of the Kulturkritik reject firmly the decadent modernity and rebel against the religion of the progress. The intellectual crisis which ensues from it besides gives birth to normative theories even elitist, in search of a lost authenticity, and opposite to the technical modernity as it shakes the traditional values.
Bathing in this generalized pessimistic climate, phenomenologists also take part in the debate. It will also be the case of philosophers as Simmel, Benjamin or Kracauer. These thinkers share with phenomenologists the interest for the analysis of the empirical reality and participate in their way in the "realization" of the phenomenology. Their texts do not any more content with diagnosing the pathological symptoms of the modernity; they also try to investigate its productions to identify the promises of emancipation. The examination of the mass culture calls in particular a differentiating judgment. This one does not still plunge the man into the most total inhumanity, she can also aspire to a democratic function. In many respects, the study of the artistic forms renewed in the modern era seems to orient the philosophies of the modernity towards a less pessimistic critical analysis. But it asks obviously question. How to take into account technical transformations of the artistic practices without rejecting them in the name of a resistance to the progress? How to avoid the reactionary faults without evading the justifiable critics of the modern violence? How to propose constructive analyses of the present without putting to sleep its vigilance (because 1930s also carry with them the threat of a return of the ideologies)? What can the phenomenological method in this respect? What does it bring to the reading of the transformations undergone by modernity? |

Learning outcomes of the course :
 |
| Main purpose:
- to encourage participants to develop their personal research capacities in the field of phenomenology

 |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
 |
| The April Workshop will provide students with a representative sample of various analyses of the way the crisis of modernity diagnosed by Kulturkritik was discussed, gone deeper into or moved in the philosophy and the sociology, in particular phenomenological, in 20th century. Those analyses will be introduced by a series of lectures.
Schedule (subject to modifications during the year):

Assessment methods and criteria :
 |
| The evaluation will be based on a personal work dedicated to the theme of the year. As for students in Master 2, this work will give rise to an oral presentation (50% of final report) and to a written text of approximatively 15 pages (50%). As for students in Master 1, only the written text is required. Evaluation criteria will be:
- compliance with given instructions (length, deadline, etc.)
- relevancy of discussed topic
- use of primary and secondary literature
- clarity and quality of language
Oral presentations should take place in April, 2013. Written works (MA-1 et MA-2) are due to 24 of May, 2013. |
