| Theoretical courses :
General introduction : landscapes, landscape ecology and the role of Men.
Spatial scale as a key concept of landscape ecology.
Landscape spatial pattern as a central theme of landscape ecology. The pattern/process paradigm.
Landscape composition: definition and quantification.
The components of landscape configuration.
Patch definition in raster and vector maps.
Exercises:
Spatial scale.
Landscape composition.
Landscape pattern : patches, matrix (terrain). |

Learning outcomes of the course :

| At the end of the course, student will be able
(i) to understand and use the basic concepts of landscape ecology, landscape composition, landscape configuration and spatial scale;
(ii) to understand and use indices of landscape composition and patch frequency. |

| Basic course of ecology. |

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :

| Teaching ex cathedra, supported by powerpoint presentations.
Individual or group exercises to illustrate the concepts and calculations on the computer.
One field exercise. |
