Course contents :  
Theoretical courses : General introduction : landscapes, landscape ecology and the role of Men. Spatial scale as a key concept of landscape ecology. Landscape spatial pattern as a central theme of landscape ecology. The pattern/process paradigm. Landscape composition: definition and quantification. The components of landscape configuration. Patch definition in raster and vector maps. Exercises: Spatial scale. Landscape composition. Landscape pattern : patches, matrix (terrain).
Learning outcomes of the course :  
At the end of the course, student will be able
(i) to understand and use the basic concepts of landscape ecology, landscape composition, landscape configuration and spatial scale; (ii) to understand and use indices of landscape composition and patch frequency.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
Basic course of ecology.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
Teaching ex cathedra, supported by powerpoint presentations.
Individual or group exercises to illustrate the concepts and calculations on the computer. One field exercise.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
Face-to-face lectures for the theoretical courses and for the field excursion.
Individual and group exercises on the computer (self-planning).
Recommended or required readings :  
Readings and course notes will be communicated during the lectures.
Assessment methods and criteria :  
Oral exam of the theoretical courses and the reports of the exercises.
Assessment of the reports of the exercises.
Work placement(s) :  
None.
Organizational remarks :  
Presence at the theoretical courses is recommended.
Every student has to understand well all aspects of the exercises, also for the group exercises.
