| Number of credits : |
| Lecturer : | Kristel Van Steen, Louis Wehenkel |
Language(s) of instruction :
| English language |
Organisation and examination :
| Teaching in the first semester, review in January |
Course contents :
- Link between probability and statistics
- Data generation and exploration
- Parametric estimation and confidence intervals
- Hypothesis testing
- Association methods
Learning outcomes of the course :
| Students will acquire a strong basis in the theory of statistics. The interaction with the students during the theory classes will be stimulated by discussions around the concepts of sampling and study design, interpretation of the data using graphical tools, the conversion of relevance data problems to statistical hypotheses, interpretation of "uncertainty",...
The main purpose of the practical sessions and projects is to enable students to first select the appropriate statistical tools and then to apply them correctly to solve real-life problems. Examples covering different computer science and engineering areas will be provided. This course also aims to enhance an orientation to critical thinking. At the end of the course, students should be able to solve problems in a variety of contexts, hereby selecting the most optimal/appropriate technique. |
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
| Calculus, algebra, geometry and probability. Elements of computer science and applied mathematics. |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| The course is composed of about 12 hours of theoretical lectures (in english), 8 hours of classroom exercises (in french) and 10 hours of assistance to the realization of two practical projects. |
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
| Face-to-face |
Recommended or required readings :
| Students will have access to course notes, slides and exercise notes.
Regarding the theory part, see

Regarding the exercise and practical projects, see
http://www.montefiore.ulg.ac.be/~vanlishout/ |
Assessment methods and criteria :
| The note is composed of two parts: the practical projects (about 25% of the final note) and a written exam. The latter is composed of two parts: the theory (about 30% of the final note) and the exercises (about 45% of the final note). |
Work placement(s) :
| No training |
Organizational remarks :
| This course is given a new jacket in 2012-2013. Course notes will be available prior to the first class. Any comments from the student's perspective are welcome. |
