Course contents :  
This course aims at studying the morphological features of Dutch. After an introduction to some basic morphological concepts, we will discuss three main morphological processes, e.g. inflection, derivation and compounding. We will more particularly see how they can be applied to Dutch through the discussion of specific topics such as the agreement of the adjective, the use of the definite article, the plural of nouns, diminutive forms, the formation of compounds,...
The course will allow the students to sharpen their knowledge of the functionung of the Dutch linguistic system.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
  • list and describe major morphological concepts;
  • anlayse the morphological structure of given Dutch words;
  • describe the processes of inflection, derivation and compounding.

Assessment methods and criteria :  
The final grade will be determined by different parts.
  • Written exam (50%) on the theoretical concepts discussed during the lectures;
  • Oral exam (50%) application of the theory to concrete and original examples;
  • For the oral exam, the students will prepare a collection of 5 press articles. They will be able to analyze any form from these articles with reference to the theory discussed in the course.
The oral and written exams of the first session will take place during the january exam session; the oral and written exams of the second session will take place at choice during the june or september exam session.
