Course contents :  
This course has a B1-B1+ CEFRL level (B1 for writing and speaking skills, B1+ for reading and listening comprehension). The aim of the course is a) to reactivate, consolidate and extend the students' general language understanding and use and b) to introduce the specific features of the language related to politics. This is done in the four language skills, i.e.reading, listening, speaking and writing. Concretely students will deal with:
  • selected articles
  • discussions and oral presentations
  • IELTS or TOEFL type writing exercises
  • grammar revision
Learning outcomes of the course :  
The dual purpose of the course is
  • to consolidate and extend the students' general language understanding and use
  • to introduce the specific features of the language related to politics
This is done in the four language skills, namely speaking, listening, writing and reading.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
Intermediate level, A2+ CEFRL level
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
In addition to regular preparation work, students will have to:
  • write 2 homework essays
  • take 2 in-class tests
  • do 1 oral presentation
These assignments (+attendance and participation) will be taken into account in the final grade. Furthermore, 6 online grammar tests will have to be taken. Those tests will account for one bonus mark (based on the results).
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
The course is taught in 90 minute sessions from September to May.
Weekly preparation work is expected, the work load this represents is variable and depends on the students' level of competence.

  • Course book Political Science- English for First-Year Students available from Intercopy
  • Grammaire anglaise de base available at Point de Vue.
Assessment methods and criteria :  
Written and oral exam in June (two inseparable parts). The written exam (65%) will include reading and listening comprehension exercises, grammar and vocabulary exercises, writing. The oral exam (15%) will deal with articles from a readings file.
Continuous assessment of progress (class participation and tasks). Accounts for 20% of the final grade.
Work done during the year will be assessed according to a number of criteria including their content and internal cohesion, the accuracy of grammar, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation, and the range of vocabulary and structure.
