Course contents :

| The course includes the following:
- Reading of texts on computer science
- Listening to recordings dealing with ICT-related topics
- Introduction to the vocabulary of computing
- Grammatical revision and consolidation exercises.

Learning outcomes of the course :
|
| The dual purpose of the course is (a) to consolidate and extend the student's general language understanding and use, and (b) to introduce the specific features of English for computing.
This is done in the four language skills, namely reading, speaking, writing and listening. |
|
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
|
| Good knowledge of basic English vocabulary and grammar (intermediate level). |

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
|
| The in-class course is taught to 25 to 30 students for three weekly hours in the first semester.
Students will be asked to give a short oral presentation on an IT-related topic.
They will also have to complete a few writing assignments that will be marked.
Active class attendance, the oral presentation and the other tasks will account for 20% of the final mark.
Students who, for some VALID reason, can't come to class regularly must get in touch with their teacher as soon as possible. |

Recommended or required readings :

| Coursebook Basic English for Computing (2012-2013) compulsory.
If necessary, students can also buy the Grammaire anglaise de base (with exercises and key) ISLV, written in French. It is available on the Sart Tilman campus (at the Point de Vue). |

Assessment methods and criteria :
|
|
- Written exam in January: reading and listening comprehension exercises, basic vocabulary of computing, grammar and language questions, writing.
|

Organizational remarks :
|
| Considering the significant differences between students, the limited in-class teaching time and the number of students per group, supervised self-learning and remedial work should be given due attention.
Students can also train on line. To do so, simply log on to http://www.islv.ulg.ac.be > Les Langues > Anglais > Interface Etudiants in order to have access to the exercises. |
