Course contents :
 |
| The objective of the course is
(i) to introduce those concepts of ecology related to urban (eco)systems;
(ii) to present an ecological and ecosystem-oriented vision on urban systems;
(iii) to study urban centers as elements composing the landscape.
The course is based on the principle that an urban zone can be considered as an introduced landscape patch and also an anthropogenic matrix.
The theoretical courses are completed by individual or group exercises.
Field trips are planned.
The aim is to offer lectures which are conceptual and academic, and which enable the students to develop an original vision on the ecological functioning of urban landscapes based upon the concepts explained during the lectures. |

Learning outcomes of the course :

| At the end of the course, student will be able
(i) to understand and use the basic concepts of (landscape) ecology related to urban (eco)systems;
(ii) to understand and develop a vision on urban systems and their role in landscapes or regions;
(iii) to study and understand the ecological functioning of urban landscapes. |

| Teaching ex cathedra, supported by powerpoint presentations.
Individual or group exercises in the field to illustrate the concepts and calculations.
Seminars to illustrate current research in urban ecology. |

| Face-to-face lectures for the theoretical courses and for the field excursions.

| Oral exam of the theoretical courses and the reports of the exercises.

| Presence at the theoretical courses is recommended.
Every student has to understand well all aspects of the exercises, also for the group exercises. |
