Course contents :
Academic year 2012-2013: "Biblical iconography and dogmatic iconography in the gothic period (12th-16th centuries)" From the 12th until the 16th century, Christian iconography experienced an unprecedented development. Image makers suddenly represented biblical episodes which they had never painted or sculpted before. Besides, new subjects such as the "pieta" were invented. Finally, certain dogmas experienced original iconographic developments - we think for example of the dogma of the Trinity.
During the seminar, we will analyse some twenty works of art from an iconography perspective. We will connect these iconographies with the developments in exegesis, philosophy and theology of that time.
