GEOG0039-1  Introduction to GNSS

Duration :  15h Th, 5h Pr, 2d FW
Number of credits :
Bachelor in geographical sciences, general orientation, 3rd year3
One-year preliminary programme leading to the Master in Geographical Sciences, Geomatics and Geometrology orientation3
Lecturer :  René Warnant
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the second semester
Course contents :
The course gives a practical introduction to positioning with GNSS.
Theorical lectures briefly explain the principle of satellite positioning, the different observables, the main error sources and the simplest positioning technique (Single Point Positioning).
Theorical lectures are illustrated by practical sessions on the field where students learn to use GNSS receivers.
During practical work sessions, the principle of least squares (seen in the frame of course "Theory of Errors") is applied to satellite positioning.
Learning outcomes of the course :
Students will be able to make simple GNSS data acquisition and data processing and to assess the precision of the obtained position.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Face-to-face learning.
Recommended or required readings :
Lecture notes are available.
Assessment methods and criteria :
The evaluation consists in an oral exam on:
- the material seen during the theoretical lectures;
- practical problems solved during pracical work sessions.
Work placement(s) :
Organizational remarks :
The course is organised during the second semester.
