Course contents :  
The first part of the course introduces the theories (structural, pragmatic, enunciative) and the linguistic tools with respect to the language teaching, regardless of the level of the descriptive, generative or contrastive linguistics, of the socio-linguistics (status and functions of languages) or of psycholinguistics (learning strategies).

The different aspects of language teaching/learning are then considered:

  • phonetics,
  • semantics,
  • syntax,
  • textuality,
at both the comprehension and the production levels.

Finally, we stress the theoretical foundations and didactic implications of the communicative and interactionist approaches proposed by contemporary linguistics.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
Analyze critically with the participants the different theories and branches of applied linguistics on which foreign French language teaching rely for developing its teaching and training methods.


In this way, the participants are given the necessary linguistic foundation to develop their educational competences.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
Throughout the presentation of the theory, the students are expected to participate actively in the discussions provoked and the practical exercises and case studies that are put to them.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
First half of first semester, Tuesdays from 3:00 to 7:00 pm, room to be announced.
Recommended or required readings :  
Course syllabus is available; students will receive copy of the slides used during the slides.
Assessment methods and criteria :  
Oral and/or written exam, and/or individual project, depending on the participants' projects.
