Course contents :  
The course of methodology is dedicated to the tasks of collecting and analysing qualitative data about social, political or institutional dimensions of environmental issues. It relates to managing and doing interviews and to apply different theoretical frameworks (Strategic analysis, CATWOE, Actor-Network analysis and the Cities). A compairzon with quantitative analysis (survey) will be realized at the introduction of the course.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
Through the use of semi-structured interviews, students will be put in good condition for the elaboration of an investigation's strategy; to render them capable of the preparation, the management and the analysis of a survey on an environemental issue ; and finally to have a critical and reflexive assesment of it.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
Each theoretical framework will be developped at the beginning of the following courses :
  • ENVT0860-3 : Controverses environnementales
  • ENVT0024-1: Théorie et gestion de la transition
  • ENVT0846-2: Introduction au Développement durable
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
The fieldworks will be carried on a single issue. Interviews will be carried out by groups of students under the guidance of two supervisors. Critical discussions about the unfolding and the outputs of the interviews will be organized.
The 4 theoretical frameworks will applied to all the interviews collected.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
The course of methodology is scheduled for the first semester. It has been designed in order to come in support of other courses during the master.

Assessment methods and criteria :  
The evaluation of the qualitative part of the course is on the basis of a written report (by groups) and its oral presentation.
Important notice: the due participation at the practical activities of the course (interviews) are mandatory for the evaluation of the students.
