Teaching in the second semester
Course contents :
See description of the two parts of the module.

Part 1 : Tools for a more sustainable industry (product life cycle analysis, best available technologies, sustainable chemistry)

This course aims at presenting several tools, methodologies allowing to design sustainable industrial processes or to improve existing processes.
The following topics will be addresses:
- Life Cycle Assessment methodology (LCA) and ecodesign
- Best available techniques
- Green process engineering.
It combines theoretical courses and industrial case studies.

Part 2 : Rational use of energy in industry

This lecture aims at presenting mechanisms to optimize the use of energy in industry. The following concepts will be covered:
- energy performance indicators - techniques for improving industrial processes - the use of renewable energy - the use of CHP - heat recovery

Learning outcomes of the course :
See description of the two parts of the module.

Part 1 : Tools for a more sustainable industry (product life cycle analysis, best available technologies, sustainable chemistry)

At the end of the course, the student will be able to
- show his understanding and his knowledge of the LCA methodology and related standards;
- to explain the advantages, potential applications, and limitations of the this methodology;
- to explain the environmental communication concept;
- to explain the ecodesign approach;
- to explain the 'green process engineering' approach and to illustrate it

Part 2 : Rational use of energy in industry

The student will be aware of main concepts of energy performance. He will also gain a good knowledge of mechanisms to improve energy performance in industrial processes.

Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Part 1 : Tools for a more sustainable industry (product life cycle analysis, best available technologies, sustainable chemistry)

Bachelor level scientific background.

Part 2 : Rational use of energy in industry

Basic thermodynamics knowledge.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
See description of the two parts of the module.

Part 1 : Tools for a more sustainable industry (product life cycle analysis, best available technologies, sustainable chemistry)

The course is based on 'ex-cathedra' lectures, seminars given by industrials, and one personal work.
The individual work will be the object of a written report which will be presented and defended during the oral examination.

Part 2 : Rational use of energy in industry

Oral sessions followed by exercises sessions on computers.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
See description of the two parts of the module.

Part 1 : Tools for a more sustainable industry (product life cycle analysis, best available technologies, sustainable chemistry)

Face-to-face lectures.

Part 2 : Rational use of energy in industry

face-to-face

Recommended or required readings :
Part 1 : Tools for a more sustainable industry (product life cycle analysis, best available technologies, sustainable chemistry)

Slides used during the lectures may be downloaded from eCampus.

Part 2 : Rational use of energy in industry

Slides will be sent to students.

Assessment methods and criteria :
See description of the two parts of the module.

Part 1 : Tools for a more sustainable industry (product life cycle analysis, best available technologies, sustainable chemistry)
