ELEC0017-1  Indirect Effects of Electromagnetic Fields

Duration :  30h Th, 30h Pr
Number of credits :
Master in Biomedical Engineering, in-depth approach, 2nd year5
Master in Electrical Engineering, in-depth approach, 2nd year5
Lecturer :  Véronique Beauvois, Jean-Louis Lilien
Coordinator :  Jean-Louis Lilien
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the first semester, review in January
Course contents :
Partim 1 : The first part of this lecture is dedicated to Electromagnetic Compatibility. The different themes are an introduction, some legal and normative aspects, test and measurement methods, design of electronic circuits and solution to solve emission and/or immunity problems.

Partim 2 : The 50 Hz is mainly concerned in this part and different ways of human health concern by electromagnetic fields is presented. Human sensitivity to electric current is detailed (and measured), depending on frequency and shape of the current in the low frequency range. Ways to limit fields effect and 50 Hz current effects on human being is analysed.
Learning outcomes of the course :
The student must be able to :
Partim1 : understand main topics in the field of Electromagnetic Compatibility.
Partim 2 : understand the knowledge on potential effects on health due to 50 Hz currents flowing through the body, for any sources.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Partim 1 &2: Basic knowledge in electromagnetism and electronic.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Partim 1 : to demonstrate the main notions, test and measuremetn methods in the EMC laboratory.

Partim 2 :

1) to evaluate human sensitivity to 50 Hz current , including wave shape effect

2) to measure fields (electric, magnetic) in various situations

3) critical evalutaion of recent litterature
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Partim 1 :
Theory : 2 hours / week during 1st semester
Laboratory : 2 times half-a-day during 1st semester or beginning of 2nd semester

Partim 2 :

after a introduction (2 times 4 hours), the students are divided in subgroups to realize their practical work.
Recommended or required readings :
Partim 1 : a copy of the slides is available.
partim 2 : mainly 2 documents will be made available. The ppt presentation (about 50 slides) and a synthesis paper (22 pages).
These documents are available on : www.tdee.ulg.ac.be (http://www.tdee.ulg.ac.be)
Assessment methods and criteria :
Partim 1&2 : evaluation is based on a personal work (done by one student or a small group (subject to be discussed).
