Course contents :  
The aim of the course is to describe from a general point of view the Belgian judicial system. It constitutes a prerequisite for the course of procedural law, which is to be studied thereafter.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
The course aims at providing students with a sufficient knowledge of the Belgian judicial system.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
None
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
Teaching is ex cathedra, except for practical exercises, during which students are expected to take an active role. A book, published by Larcier, is available (see hereunder).
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
Lectures and tutorials take place during the first quarter of the year. Some important points of the course may be reviewed by experienced students.
Recommended or required readings :  
The course's teaching is based on Les institutions judiciaires : organisation et éléments de compétence, written by G. de Leval and Fr. Georges. Students are also required to purchase the Belgian Code judiciaire.
Assessment methods and criteria :  
Assessment will be by a written exam in January. During others examination periods, it will happen by an oral exam. Students are required to demonstrate their knowledge and their understanding of matters exposed in the book and during the lectures as well.
