Course contents :
Located at the crossroads of economic sociology of ICT industries and industrials and political economy of communication, the course aims to study - in various aspects and approaches - the so-called "information society".
From this perspective, two phenomena - inextricably linked - will be subject to discussion and investigation : 1 the "new" American ICT Security Complex 2° the political construction of the ICT market in Europe.
Learning outcomes of the course :
1) An effort will be made to make students more familiar with the resources and methods of a model of complex analysis that belongs both to the sociology of major business leaders and the political economy of ICT. This approach will combine an analysis of the capitalistic structure of the most powerful European and North American multinationals that operate in a variety of sub-sectors of ICT industries (hardware, software, telecommunications, semi-conductors, consumer electronics, etc.), with a more sociological study of the executive structure of these companies ; 2) to introduce students to research in the field of socioeconomics of ICT industries.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
None
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
After a first hour class devoted to the theory and political history of ICT, the teacher will introduce students to research in the field of socio-economics of ICT industries. These practical activities are preparatory to the individual research paper that each student will submit at the end of the course.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Face-to-face
Recommended or required readings :
Required reading :
"La construction politique du marché des TIC" (Chap. V), in Geoffrey Geuens, Les vieilles élites de la nouvelle économie, Paris, Presses Universitaires de France, 2011.
Assessment methods and criteria :
Individual work, worth one third of the final grade, will be required of each student. It will, on this occasion, verify the achievements of students in research in the field of socio-economics of ICT industries. Work instructions will be deposited on My ULg early October 2012. The work should be strictly submitted in the box of Geoffrey Geuens for Thursday, December 20, 2012, at the latest. Students who have not deposited their work may not present oral examination.
The oral examination, worth two-thirds of the final grade, will test the theoretical knowledge of the course and the students' ability to exercise a critical view of the exposed material. The material over which students will be examined includes :
1) "La construction politique du marché des TIC" (Chap. V), in Geoffrey Geuens, Les vieilles élites de la nouvelle économie, Paris, Presses Universitaires de France, 2011. 2) theoretical lectures by the teacher, including information communicated through PowerPoint slide shows and school cases that have been the object of detailed analysis.
