Course contents :  
In 2012-2013 there will be two sections to this course. The first section will be based on a social theory of mediatic discourse and of structural censorship. The second will consist in in-depth analysis of the news provided by the french magazine Paris-Match.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
This course takes the form of an intensive research seminar covering a range of press articles but also books about the press. It will not only encourage an in-depth analysis of the mechanisms behind journalistic discourse, but also gives students the methodological training for drafting their final dissertation.

Students will make a first reading of each issue of the magazine Paris-Match at home, every week, before the lecture.

References: Pierre Bourdieu, Langage et pouvoir symbolique (Paris, Seuil, coll. " Points ", 2001) and Pascal Durand, La Censure invisible (Arles, Actes Sud, 2006). Students must have at their own disposal every weekly issue of Paris-Match.
Several scientific papers will also be recommended during the course.
