Course contents :

 | The course starts with a quick review of chemistry foundations, as well as a general a general description of the chemical reaction. Liquids, solids, and phase changes are studied, with emphasis to gas properties and behaviour. Solutions and their properties are described in details. The chapter on chemical kinetics allows to correlate specie concentrations and time and insists on the collision theory. The chemical equilibrium is then described and allows the study of aqueous acid and base equilibria and electrochemistry. The first quarter ends with the description of foundations of chemical thermodynamics.
The second quarter starts with the study of atomic structure. This allows the description of chemical bonding through the theories of atomic, hybrid, and molecular orbitals. Molecular structures are further described in those chapters.
The last part of the course is dedicated to organic chemistry and starts with a chapter on stereochemistry. The approach of organic chemistry is based on the four major types of reactions, e.g. addition, elimination, substitution, and rearrangement reactions. Emphasis is set on the reactivity of important functional groups instead of the systematic study of synthesis processes. This part ends with a brief discussion on carbohydrates and other molecules of biological interest.
The chapters of the course are abundantly illustrated by practical applications as well as numbers of key concept problems. |

 | Build up minimum chemical foundations for the student to take up its veterinary formation in good conditions. The study of chemistry basics is carried out to arouse the critical and scientific mind of the future dentist. This course will also give the student a chance to get acquainted with high flow of information. |

 | The various parts of the course will be approached exhaustively to allow all students with graduate school knowledge to understand. Students with a scientific background will probably be favoured at the beginning. A good knowledge of mathematic basics is mandatory. |

 | Students are grouped by pairs for experimental laboratories (TPs). Experiments illustrate and complete principles studies during the theoretical course. Attendance at laboratories is compulsory. For safety reasons, access to the laboratory will only be granted to students wearing an appropriate lab coat. Safety glasses will be provided at the start of the year and have to be worn during all experiments.
Experiments illustrate and complete ideas presented during the course. It is important to prepare it in advance.
TPs are 16% of the final mark. A question will be asked at the beginning of the lab and personal comprehension of the work will complete the note for the laboratory. |

 | A detailed time table including courses, practical sessions, and laboratories will be provided at the start of the year. The theoretical course is provided twice a week (1.5h per course) in the first quarter and 3 times a week in the second quarter. Practical exercise sessions are provided once or twice a week (3h per session) by series of students. Laboratories are once a week (4h). |

 | A copy of the slides of the theoretical course is provided prior the course either through the intranet web site MyULg or directly to student representative. The course is made of around 1500 slides that are grouped 4 per page in .pdf format. Students have the opportunity to complete the slides while attending the course. The 2 reference books are:

Assessment methods and criteria :

 | The student must have his student card and ID ready to display upon request during exams.
The fractionation is as follows :
- First quadrimestre : 42%
- Second quadrimestre : 42%
- Practical laboratory : 16% (based on reports, no exams)
January :
- Written exam theory and exercices regarding quad 1, MCQ (42%).
June :
- Written exam theory and exercices regarding quad 1, MCQ (42%), if no exemption in January.
- Written exam theory and exercices regarding quad 2, MCQ and open questions (42%).
September :
- Written exam theory and exercices regarding quad 1, MCQ (42%), if no exemption in January nor June.
- Written exam theory and exercices regarding quad 2, MCQ and open questions (42%), if no exemption in June.
Reminder for exemption :
- An exemption is possible from period 1 to 2 of the first session for a note of minimum 10/20.
- No exemption is possible from a session to another.
- No partial exemption from a year to the other.
Notes will be available on MyULg after deliberation. Details of the chemistry course will be posted at the professor's office door. No communication of detailed notes by e-mail or phone will be provided. The professor will be available at a specific date for questions and comments. Private interview are possible upon request.
Students of other languages than French will be allowed to use a dictionnary during exams, after approval by the professor.
No programable calculators are allowed in exams. |
