CHIM0310-5  Chemistry preparing to biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences

Duration :  60h Th, 20h Pr, 20h QA Sess., 20h REM
Number of credits :
Bachelor in biomedical sciences, 1st year11
Bachelor in pharmaceutical sciences, 1st year12
Lecturer :  Christine Jérôme
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
All year long, with partial in January
Course contents :
Topics : general and organic chemistry.
Aggregation states of the matter, atomic and molecular structures, chemical bondings, chemical equilibria, pH, redox (tome 1)
Thermodynamics, kinetics, reactions and examples related to biomedical sciences. General characteristics of organic compounds and their main reactions. (tome 2)
Learning outcomes of the course :
- Acquire some basic tools of chemistry necessary for pharmacy and biomedical sciences
- Use and apply correctly these tools including reasoning ability, the learning and understanding of the concepts in various fields.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Knowledge of some backgrounds of mathematics of the secondary level.
Good knowledge of French language.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
7 laboratories are programmed to enable the students to apply and sense by themselves the practical involvements of the theoretical lecture.
Directed exercises by smaller groups of student are organized on the whole course
Remiediation sessions are also organized for interested students, during the entire year.
Formative interrogations are organized regularly as MCQ during the entire year including one in November in the exam conditions.
Question/answer sessions are organized at the end of the semesters.
During magistral lectures, concepts will rely on concrete questions on pharmaceutical and biomedical fieds and on every-day life problems. They will be illustrated by demonstration experiments on video.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Face-to-face
Recommended or required readings :
Lecture notes : They are sold at the first lecture. They consist of two books entitled "Introduction à la chimie" (2011) : C. Jérôme, of 6 chapters each. The transparencies used during the lectures will also be available during the year via My Ulg.
Assessment methods and criteria :
The first general examination is occurring during January and will cover the topics studied during the first quadrimester (tome1). Students getting at least 10/20 will be exempted for these chapters in June. For the students who failed this examination, the results will not be taken into account and remediation will be organized during the second quadrimester. The examinations in June as well as in September will be only written ones (Multiple choices questions, (QCM)). It will occur by the following way :
- QCM on tome1 (1/2 day), only for students that failed in January - QCM on tome2.
The final quotation will be calculated as follows : 20% for laboratories (reports + questions during the labs) 40% for tome1 40% for tome2
The global quotation will be the averaged on 20.
Work placement(s) :
Organizational remarks :
The laboratories are mandatory.
A report will be asked for each laboratory to all students and QCM/QROC questions will be asked.
