Course contents :
|
| This course will cover energy aspects of a physcal unit operation in which mass and heat transfers are strongly connected: the drying of solids.
The course presents first mechanisms controling performance of this type of apparatus:
- Liquid-vapor equilibria: review of concepts of temperatures of wet bulb thermometer and adiabatic saturation, psychrometric diagrams.
- Kinetics of liquid-vapor transfer.
- Solid-liquid-vapor equilibria: different forms of water in a solid, isotherms of adsorption.
- Drying kinetics: different periods for drying.
The course presents then modeling of different types dryers
- Direct or indirect contact dryers
- Continuous and discontinuous dryers
- Heat and mass balances.

Learning outcomes of the course :
|
| At the end of the course, students will be able to apply the theoretical concepts and the analysis methodology of unit operations from the point of view of energetic consumption. They will be able to use this methodology to design and determine the size of a process, taking into account the energetic aspect. |

Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :

| A course "Chemical Engineering - physical unit operations" (e.g. CHIM0083-2)or a course with similar contents) should have been attended during previous years (or it should be attended the same year). |

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :

| The course is based on ex-cathedra lectures (15 h).
These lectures are dedicated to the detailed description of the fundamental concepts necessary for the analysis of the energetic aspects of unit operations. |

Assessment methods and criteria :
|
| An oral exam is organized during the first session (January).
Students prepare their answers on paper which they will then explain and develop orally. Evaluation relies essentially on the understanding of concepts and relationships between them rather on the capacity to make restitution. The exam proceeds with closed reference books.
The second session exam is organized in the same way as in January. |
