BIOC0320-5  General biochemistry

Duration :  25h Th, 10h Pr, 6h SEM
Number of credits :
Bachelor in biomedical sciences, 2nd year4
Bachelor in pharmaceutical sciences, 2nd year4
Lecturer :  Lucien Bettendorff
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the first semester, review in January
Course contents :
The aim of this course is to bring about an overview of the chemical reactions going in living cells. The program is divided in four parts :
1. molecular constituants of living cells, including proteins and nucleic acids
2. The biochemical reactions: energetics, kinetics and mechanisms
3. The metabolism
4. Storage and transfer of information
Learning outcomes of the course :
1. Introduce the molecular components of living organisms and their characteristics
2. To give basic information on the chemical reactions occurring in living cell, while insisting on the biochemistry of proteins and their roles (a Molecular Biology course will be given later)
3. A sold basis in biochemistry is a prerequisite for the courses of general and human physiology.
4. To give an overview of the techniques used in biomedical laboratories.
5. To develop the critical thinking of the students by discussing the pros and cons of selected hypotheses.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
General biology, cytology, chemistry and physics
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Three sessions are organized during the six-month period and which relate to the techniques of handling of proteins: chromatography, proteins quantification, enzymatic activity measurement and electrophoresis
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Lectures
Program and schedule detailed in vade-mecum
Practical work
Program and schedule detailed in vade-mecum
Seminar
Program and schedule detailed in vade-mecum
Website A eCampus-based website will assist teaching of biochemistry.
Recommended or required readings :
The texts related with this course will be provided to students through e-campus website along with all supporting material (diaporamas...).
Assessment methods and criteria :
Written examination on material seen during the lectures and practical works will be organized according to the general program of the studies.
