| The course will consist of close readings of a sample of lyrical poems by English Renaissance authors, among whom William Shakespeare and John Donne. A second part will subsequently focus on Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, as well as various critical approaches to the latter, thus attempting to familiarize the students to the use of secondary material. |

| Enhance the students' ability to understand and interpret literary texts of whatever denomination, and to provide written analyses in the form of articulate essays in English. |

| Next to the seminars, some attention will be devoted to the difficulties of essay-writing and to the conventions governing the compilation of a bibliography. |

| Apart from the poems (which will be circulated in class) and the novella by Conrad, the student must read two novels (chosen from a list which will be made available; see below). |

Modalités d'évaluation et critères :
|
| A written and an oral exam will be organized in May/June and in August September, 2013. The written exam will consist of an analysis of a short story, while the oral exam will take the form of a commentary on two novels (of the student's free choice) read in the light of the relevant secondary literature. |
