The aim of the training is to turn the occupational physician an advisor in prevention who can :
  • assess health hazards in the labour environment ;
  • elaborate, plan and assess prevention programs ;
  • work within a multidisciplinary team for work prevention and protectionl.

The programme is structured in two parts, each spread over two years.
The first part consists of theoretical and practical courses, planned activities and a training period of 8 weeks in a medical service ; its content meets the minimum requirements set by the Royal Decree of March 5, 1970 for the practice of occupational medicine in Belgium.
The second part involves additional compulsory courses chosen by the candidate, interdisciplinary seminars in conjuction with the practice of occupational medicine, and preparing and defending a scientific and personal work.

These two years of study correspond to the two years of specific training provided by the RD of September 5, 2006 (MB : September 25, 2006), setting the criteria for the approval of specialist doctor in occupational medicine. The access to this title of specialist doctor is also subject to the completion of 24 months of training in professional practice under the supervision of a tutor following a training plan previously approved by the Federal Public Service of Public Health.
