Paragraph 64 of the "décret Bologne" of the French Community of Belgium reads: "All University study programmes leading to a graduate degree must comprise a Final Year Work (FYW) accounting for 15 to 29 credits. This FYW concerns any teaching activity, including training, practical and other professional-learning activities, to emphasize the following qualities of the students: autonomy, criticism, personal qualities and professional competences. The FYW comprises at least a written manuscript". All information regarding the organization and the realisation of the FYW the presentation and the explanation of the evaluation criteria, the recommandations to the authors for the manuscript of the 2nd and 3rd GMV, different email contact addresses and the deadlines to send the documents are present on the website of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (file "GUIDE du TFE"). Different tables and forms should be uploaded from the same site.
Learning outcomes of the course :
The Final Year Work (FYW) must allow the tutors and the students to appreciate the level of metacognition of the latter (= to know how one learns and what one knows; to learn to know oneself during the learning process). The purpose of the FYW is therefore far beyond a simple restitution procedure of professional competences.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
The FYW is spread over two years: 2nd and 3rd GMV. During the 2nd GMV the FYW is a sound and critical review of the literature that will serve as a basis to introduce and to discuss the work performed during the 3rdGMV. The literature review concerns a problem or a question dealing with veterinary medicine in a very broad meaning, in its clinical, para-clinical and/or other aspects (medicine, surgery, obstetrics, diagnostic laboratories, research, animal production, hygiene, ethology, food chain, environment, public health, teaching, society, behaviour, anatomy, histology, physiology, genetics, zootherapy, ...).The topic of the FYW will be communicated to the administration via an on-line document found on the web site of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, no later than at the end of the first week dedicated to its realisation. The tutor will receive one exemplar of the manuscript for evaluation. Another exemplar in pdf format will be sent to the administration (email adress and deadline in the "GUIDE du TFE"). The recommandations to the authors are described in the "GUIDE du TFE" on the website of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Cover pages can be downloaded from the same web site.
The FYW also includes a section entiteled "scientific writing in english" organised by prof C. Bouvy. It is composed of a theoretical part and an obligatory redactional exercice accounting for 20% of the final FYW evaluation.
Assessment methods and criteria :
The FYW being spread over two years (2nd and 3rd GMV), the assessment procedure must be continuous and coherent. The assessment procedure must first be formative (i.e. it must guide the student to the level of excellence) and, then, certificative (with a note), to attest the quality of the work. Moreover, the "scientific writing in english" part of the work accounts for 20% of the global evaluation.
Organizational remarks :
For pedagogy and organization reasons, the FYW can not be proposed as an isolated course to the students of the 1st GMV.Instructions for ERASMUS out students are also present on the website of the Faculty.
