Course contents :
 |
| Basic practical course on clinical examinations and main diseases of birds (production and pets), rabbits (production and pets), rodents (pets), reptiles, free-living indigenous wild birds and free-living indigenous wild mammals
This is a basic course for all veterinarians (production, pet, ...) not a specialisation course.
Students take part in medical examinations, treatments and necropsies of animal species described above either sent directly by owners or by veterinarians for specialized examinations .
According to legal limits on farm visits improve this teaching. |

Learning outcomes of the course :

| At the end of the course students will be able
- to make a complete anamnesis and to collect clinical signs or to find significant gross lesions
- to analyses clinical data and to make a differential diagnosis
- to determine how and when to refer complex cases
- to propose complementary examinations and to set up a treatment
- to face emergencies
- to establish a vital, economic, sporting or zootechnical prognosis
- to settle preventive measures
for main common diseases of birds (production and pets), rabbits (production and pets), rodents (pets), reptiles, free-living indigenous wild birds and free-living indigenous wild mammals
It must be emphasized that most often the diagnosis is based on post-mortem examination. Consequently learning outcomes include examinations of both alive and dead animals. |

Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :

| Notions dedicated to birds, rabbits, and new companion animals that are developed during the theoretical courses from previous years (anatomy, physiology, propaedeutics, parasitology, bacteriology, virology, ...) are of the uppermost importance. A thorough knowledge of the course " Medicine of birds, rabbits and rodents " (VETE0439-1VETE0027-1) is mandatory. |

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :

| Students are in group during clinical activities. To get practical skills a thorough knowledge of the theoretical data as given in the prerequisites is mandatory.
Clinical examinations and practical work on animals will first be given to students having good theoretical knowledge |

Assessment methods and criteria :
 |
| Permanent evaluation by the staff of the work, the behaviour, the knowledge during the clinic with specific test during the week. This test may happen the first day of the clinic. Students are advised to complete their case knowledge by specific readings.
Students in Augustus / September retakes will have to spend a week in the clinic at a moment determined by the incumbent (Associated Prof. Dr D. Marlier), possibly during holiday. During this week, the staff will continuously evaluate them.
During visit of farms and/or bird and small mammals rehabilitation centers students must have an irreproachable attitude and behaviour. Failure to respect these indications is enough to get a serious insufficiency (7/20) as final note. |

Organizational remarks :
 |
| The attendance at the clinic is compulsory. Absences have to be justified by phone at the service and confirmed by an official certificate. Making up of all the absences is compulsory at a moment determined by the incumbent, possibly during holiday.
The unjustified absences will be taken into account at the time of deliberations.
