Course contents :  
- Definition and steps in varietal selection
- Natural evolution, plant domestication and organisation of gene pools
- Breeding systems and floral biology
- Schemes of plant breeding (vegetative and generative propagation)
- Polyploidy and interspecific hibridizations
- Applications of plant breeding to agronomic constraints
Learning outcomes of the course :  
To develop the basis of varietal improvement in cultivated plants and to develop on the basis of breeding systems selection schemes at the intra- and interspecific levels
After completing the course the student is expected to
-assess the influence of genetics and reproductive biology on plant breeding
-become familiar with the techniques of field plant breeding
-develop schemes of plant breeding for crops representative of the breeding system diversity
