Number of credits :
Master in Space Sciences, Research focus, 1st yearSecond semester3
Master in Space Sciences, Research focus, 2nd yearSecond semester3
Lecturer :  Pierre Magain
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Course contents :
We propose an introduction to the understanding of our universe beyond the Milky Way: formation and properties of galaxies, active galactic nuclei, clusters and groups of galaxies, high redshift universe... and also the cosmology basics useful to understand the up-to-date vision of the formation and evolution of the universe (distances, dark matter, gravitational lensing, cosmic microwave backrgound).
This lecture will focus on observing means, phenomenological aspects and modeling as well.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Astrophysics (SPAT0033-1)
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
A personal research work will be asked to the students.

2h lectures in 2nd semester
Recommended or required readings :
A copy of the slides is available.
We base our lecture on the P. Schneider book, "Extragalactic Astronomy and Cosmology" (Springer, 2006), and also Carroll & Ostlie "An introduction to modern astrophysics" (Pearson, 2007)
