Course contents :  
First part
  • Presentation of the historical dimension of the North-South relationship: colonial interventions and the birth of the notion of development.
  • Putting concepts of development, underdevelopment and co-operation towards development into perspective, using theoretical principles of development and the relevant political and institutional contexts.
  • In conclusion, the following question will be addressed: How can current paradigms of international co-operation be situated and understood?
Second part
  • The socio-anthropology of contemporary interventions in developing countries through international aid and co-operation policies and interventions of development and partnership institutions. Analysis of cases and examples drawn principally from African experiences.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
  • Knowledge of the evolution of main theories of development, international co-operation and North-South relationships.
  • Acquisition of a capacity for historical, comparative and critical analysis of speeches, ideologies and methods used by co-operation institutions and development programmes.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
An interest in the problems of development in the South. The course was originally designed in the context of a DES.

Direct teaching: presentations, interventions by researchers.

  • First and second parts - a portfolio of reading will be distributed at the start of the course
  • Third part - Jean-Pierre Olivier de Sardan, Anthropologie et développement. Karthala Editions, Paris, 2003.
  • Portfolio 2: case studies
Assessment methods and criteria :  
  • First session: individual written exam, open questions.
  • Second session: Individual oral exam.

Students will be systematically invited to take part in conferences, seminars etc organised in the department or in relation to University co-operation activities: conferences and seminars of Cecodel-Ulg, Métis courses and development education activities of NGOs and specialised organisations, programmes of Commission Universitaire au Développement (CUD), the Groupes de Recherche en Appui à la Politique Federale de Cooperation (GRAP-CUD)
