Course contents :
 |
| The first part of this course will be taught by Prof. Andreas Thele and will deal with modern China (17th to 20th centuries). The emphasis will be put on key moments in the modern history of China: Opium wars; emergence of the issue of modernity and of nationalism, intellectual renewal, etc. The second part of the cours will be taught by Prof. Eric Florence et will delve upon the major political events which took place during the Mao-Era: early era mass movements; 100 flowers campaigns; Great leap forward; Cultural revolution, etc. |

Learning outcomes of the course :

| The main aim of this course is to improve students' knowledge of the major sociopolitical events of modern and conteporary China and to allow students to better understand processes at play in China today. |

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
 |
| The students are expected to prepare each session with a series of readings. After the lecture by the professor a discussion will take place between students during each of the teaching sessions. |
