Lecturer :  Michel Pirotton
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Course contents :
Based on the fundamentals of basic principles of hydraulics, this course uses the free surface properties to set a single mathematical formalism applicable to continuous and discontinuous flows .
The course tackled notably the notions of friction laws, critical and uniform water depths, shape and calculation of backwater curves, energy, hydraulic jump in uniform rectangular cross sections.
Learning outcomes of the course :
The main goals of the course consists in tackling in a critical way the notions of free surface hydrodynamics.
In addition to the ex cathedra lectures giving the theory and the essential basic equations, these goals are met through guided practical reflection works, based on real cases, as well as through laboratory and on site visits.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Basic notions in fluid mechanics
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Guided exercises leading to the handling in an individual report at the end of the daily session or at the end of several thematic sessions.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
The course is made of sessions with a theoretical ex cathedra lecture and a practical session consisting in a guided exercise and the redaction of an individual report
Recommended or required readings :
slides avalaible on the site http://www.hach.ulg.ac.be/cms/supportcours
Assessment methods and criteria :
Handling in practical works reports is obligatory and leads to an individual mark.
A written examination is organized for the whole of the course during the June or September examination period. It counts for a theoretical and exercises parts.
The theoretical examinations are organized without any support while the practical examinations can be solved using the course support.
The final mark results from a balance between the partial marks.
